Philippines Probes Alleged Illegal Land Transfer Linked to POGO

The National Bureau of Investigation (Philippines) (NBI) has launched an investigation into an alleged illegal transfer of farmland in Bataan to a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO). This raises new concerns over land ownership and regulatory compliance in the country.

Allegations of Illegal Land Transfer

According to reports from the Philippine News Agency, around 20 farmers have submitted statements and documents. They claim that parcels of agricultural land were transferred to a private company linked to POGO activities. The group also alleged connections to former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

The farmers contend that the transfers were completed without the necessary government approvals. This calls into question the legality of the transactions.

Concerns Over Falsified Documents

The NBI has stated that some of the submitted documents may have been falsified. This raises serious concerns about the validity of the land transfers. Moreover, authorities are now working to build a case to identify those responsible. They may face criminal liability if wrongdoing is proven.

Background of POGO Enforcement

The investigation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) sector. In late 2024, authorities conducted a raid on a POGO facility in a freeport zone in Bataan. The operator of the Central One facility denied operating as an offshore gaming provider and criticized the raid as unlawful.

POGOs have since been officially banned by presidential decree in Philippines, with follow-up legislation introduced to prevent the sector’s resurgence. Authorities have continued to monitor and enforce compliance to ensure that illegal operations do not return.

Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation continues, officials are working to determine whether the alleged land transfers were conducted illegally. They are also checking whether any individuals or entities violated existing laws.

The case highlights broader concerns surrounding regulatory enforcement, land ownership, and the legacy of POGO operations in the Philippines. Authorities maintain strict oversight to prevent further violations.
