Premier League Ends Front-of-Shirt Gambling Sponsorships

The 2026–27 Premier League season has begun without a gambling brand appearing on the front of any club’s matchday shirt. This ends more than two decades of front-of-shirt betting sponsorships in England’s top football division.

The change follows the Premier League’s voluntary agreement, announced in 2023, to remove gambling companies from the front of club shirts. However, the league continues to permit sponsorship on shirt sleeves, training apparel, stadium advertising, and other commercial assets.

Clubs Face Significant Sponsorship Losses

The removal of front-of-shirt gambling sponsors is expected to reduce commercial revenue across the league.

According to industry estimates, Premier League clubs could collectively lose around £80 million in sponsorship income during the 2026–27 season. Several clubs have replaced betting brands with sponsors from sectors such as financial services, technology, tourism, and consumer products. Meanwhile, others have started the season without a front-of-shirt sponsor.

The transition has created a more competitive sponsorship market, particularly for clubs outside the league’s largest commercial brands.

Asia-Focused Betting Brands Lose Key Marketing Channel

Many of the gambling companies previously featured on Premier League shirts primarily targeted customers in Asian markets. This focus was rather than the United Kingdom.

These sponsorships were widely viewed as a way for offshore operators to build brand recognition and credibility through association with one of the world’s most watched football leagues. Nevertheless, many of the brands had limited visibility or operations within the UK market.

Industry observers noted that the Premier League’s global audience made front-of-shirt sponsorships a valuable marketing tool. In addition, operators sought international exposure.

Regulatory Pressure Reshapes the Market

The shift follows increased regulatory scrutiny of gambling sponsorship arrangements. This includes action against white-label licensing structures used by several offshore betting brands.

The UK government is also considering broader restrictions that would prohibit unlicensed gambling operators from sponsoring British sports teams across all commercial assets. These restrictions would extend beyond front-of-shirt branding.

While betting sponsorship remains permitted in other areas of English football, including the English Football League, the Premier League’s policy marks a significant change in the relationship between top-flight football and the gambling industry. As a result, the move is expected to reshape how gambling operators approach sports sponsorship in the UK. Furthermore, it encourages clubs to diversify their commercial partnerships.
