Sri Lanka has launched a new visa-free entry program for travelers from 40 countries. This program allows eligible visitors to obtain a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for tourism purposes from 25 May 2026.
The initiative forms part of the country’s efforts to stimulate tourism growth and attract more visitors from key international markets. This is important as the sector continues its recovery.
Visa-Free Access Covers Major Tourism Markets
The new policy applies to holders of diplomatic, official, service, and ordinary passports from 40 eligible countries.
The list includes major tourism source markets such as India, China, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan.
Although nationals of Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore benefit from separate bilateral agreements with Sri Lanka, they must also obtain an ETA before arrival.
Travelers Receive Free 30-Day Stay
Under the scheme, eligible tourists can stay in Sri Lanka for up to 30 days without paying visa fees.
The ETA permits double entry during its validity period. Consequently, travelers can enter the country twice from the date of their first arrival.
Maldivian nationals will continue to receive a 90-day tourist visa through the ETA system. This benefit remains under the existing agreement between the two countries.
Visitors who wish to remain in Sri Lanka beyond the initial 30-day period must apply for an extension and pay the relevant fees.
Supporting Tourism Recovery
The government expects the new policy to simplify travel procedures and encourage more international visitors to choose Sri Lanka as a destination.
By removing visa fees and streamlining entry requirements, authorities aim to strengthen arrivals from high-potential markets across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
The initiative represents another step in Sri Lanka’s broader tourism recovery strategy. As a result, the country seeks to increase visitor numbers, support local businesses, and boost tourism-related economic activity.
Officials also confirmed that any ETA fees paid before 25 May 2026 remain non-refundable despite the introduction of the visa-free program.
With easier access now available for travelers from 40 countries, Sri Lanka hopes to improve its competitiveness in the regional tourism market. The country also aims to accelerate growth in international arrivals throughout 2026.
