Thailand Delays Casino Bill Reading Amid Political Tensions

Thailand

Thailand has decided to postpone the first parliamentary reading of its controversial casino legalization bill, initially set for July 9th. Officials say the government needs more time to clarify the bill’s purpose to the public.

Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri explained:

“There is still a lack of public understanding about the purpose of this bill. The government needs more time to thoroughly explain its intent before it proceeds to Parliament in Thailand.”

Previously, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat insisted the government still held enough coalition support to move the bill forward, with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra backing the proposal. Nevertheless, the coalition remains fragile due to internal divisions and external challenges, including rising border tensions with Cambodia.

According to Wisut Chainarun, chairman of the government whip, political turbulence disrupted plans for public awareness campaigns. He admitted:

“The planned public engagement around the legislation simply didn’t happen, especially within Thailand.”

Meanwhile, the Cambodian border conflict has underscored the high stakes involved. Around 30 casinos operate along the Cambodia–Thailand border, attracting large numbers of Thai gamblers despite gambling being illegal domestically. While this reality has bolstered arguments for legalization, the government believes caution is necessary.

Consequently, officials have shifted their legislative focus. As Manaporn noted:

“We need to start with softer issues first — until the political climate becomes more favorable in Thailand.”

Although the bill has been delayed, it remains a priority for the government, with supporters arguing regulated casinos could generate significant economic benefits and curb illegal gambling practices in Thailand.
