The Betting and Gaming Council has launched a new digital initiative aimed at helping consumers identify unlicensed gambling platforms.
The interactive campaign, titled “Spot The Black Market,” challenges users to distinguish between legitimate operators and illegal websites that often imitate licensed brands. Moreover, the tool forms part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the risks posed by offshore gambling platforms targeting UK players.
Interactive Game Highlights Risks of Unlicensed Sites
The online game encourages players to review website features and determine whether a platform is licensed. It also asks players to consider if a platform is operating outside UK regulations.
According to industry observers, illegal gambling sites increasingly replicate the branding, layout, and user experience of legitimate operators to attract customers. This strategy can make it difficult for players to recognize whether a platform operates under UK regulatory oversight.
The campaign aims to improve consumer awareness by demonstrating how easily some illegal platforms can appear legitimate at first glance.
Licensed Operators Stress Consumer Protection Standards
Licensed gambling operators in the UK must comply with strict regulations set by the UK Gambling Commission. These requirements include safeguards such as deposit limits, identity verification, and anti-money laundering procedures.
Illegal operators, by contrast, typically operate outside these protections. Industry representatives argue that this can expose players to higher risks. These risks include lack of consumer safeguards and limited recourse in disputes.
The initiative therefore seeks to highlight the difference between regulated platforms and unlicensed websites operating offshore.
Regulated Sector Highlights Economic Contribution
The BGC also used the campaign to emphasize the economic impact of the regulated gambling sector. According to the organization, licensed operators contribute around £6.8 billion annually to the UK economy and support approximately 109,000 jobs.
The sector is also estimated to generate £4 billion in tax revenue each year. At the same time, it provides sponsorship and funding across several British sports leagues.
Industry representatives argue that combating illegal operators is important to protect both consumers and the sustainability of the regulated market.
Education Seen as Key to Tackling the Black Market
A BGC spokesperson said the campaign is designed to demonstrate how illegal gambling websites attempt to attract players. They do this by mimicking legitimate operators.
By encouraging users to actively identify suspicious platforms, the organization hopes to improve consumer awareness and online safety.
The initiative reflects broader industry efforts to reduce the influence of unregulated gambling sites. At the same time, it aims to direct players toward licensed platforms operating under UK regulatory oversight.
