Google is investigating reports of fake casino and reward apps appearing through its Play Store Early Access programme after cybersecurity company Bitdefender identified thousands of potentially deceptive titles.
Bitdefender said its analysis found Early Access applications that appeared to promote fake casino games, cash-reward schemes, misleading utilities and possible trademark infringements.
Early Access Removes Public Reviews
Google Play Early Access allows developers to release unfinished applications while collecting user feedback before a full launch.
However, apps in the programme do not display public star ratings and reviews. Bitdefender said this removes an important trust signal that users typically rely on when evaluating unfamiliar applications.
The cybersecurity company identified thousands of Early Access titles among apps installed by its users and said some appeared to use gambling-style mechanics or reward claims to attract downloads.
Fake Casino Apps Promise Cash Rewards
According to Bitdefender, some of the flagged applications promise users cash rewards, PayPal payments, cryptocurrency earnings, gift cards, free spins or casino jackpots.
The apps often resemble casual slot or puzzle games. Bitdefender said some appear to generate advertising revenue while making it increasingly difficult for users to reach withdrawal thresholds.
Cybernews reported that some flagged applications had attracted hundreds of thousands of downloads, with one potentially deceptive title exceeding one million installs.
Misleading Ads Drive App Traffic
Bitdefender also found that some of the applications appeared in advertisements on platforms including TikTok and Facebook.
The advertisements allegedly used misleading promotional content, including AI-generated celebrity deepfakes and claims offering large numbers of free spins.
Some listings also appeared to use third-party trademarks without authorisation. Bitdefender cited an Early Access title using the name “Grand Theft Auto V” as an example and said some developers had uploaded multiple similar applications.
Google Reviews Play Store Listings
The findings have prompted Google to investigate the reported applications and the use of Early Access for potentially deceptive purposes.
For app developers, advertisers and digital platforms, the case highlights the importance of transparent app descriptions, legitimate reward claims and stronger safeguards around gambling-style content.
The absence of public ratings and reviews in Early Access can make it harder for users to assess unfamiliar applications, increasing the importance of platform-level screening and enforcement.
