Cambodia Responds to Gambling-Related Pressures

Cambodia

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has rejected accusations that his country harbours illegal online gambling operations. He claimed that neighbouring countries, particularly Thailand, are deflecting attention from their own issues.

During the closing of the Extraordinary General Assembly of Cambodia Scouts in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, Hun Manet addressed rising criticism from Thailand. He accused the Thai government of escalating tensions by cutting electricity to suspected gambling hubs and banning Thai workers from crossing into Poipet to work in casinos and entertainment venues.

“There are many things being spread to Cambodia, especially online accusations,” Hun Manet said, according to Khmer Times. “But look at your own country — it’s not perfect. Some nations love to blame their neighbours while ignoring their own faults.”

The Prime Minister defended Cambodia’s position despite growing international concern. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recently released a map identifying Cambodia—particularly Sihanoukville—as a global hotspot for online scams and gambling activities.

Thai cyber police have alleged that the Huoine Group, a network tied to online scams and call center operations, may have links to a nephew of the Prime Minister. Hun Manet denied those claims and dismissed them as politically motivated.

Although the government insists it is cracking down on illegal gambling and scams, observers argue that enforcement remains inconsistent. Regional governments and global watchdogs continue to monitor Cambodia’s role in the online gambling ecosystem, calling for greater transparency and cooperation.

As pressure mounts, Hun Manet’s administration faces a difficult balancing act between defending national sovereignty and responding to legitimate international concerns about cross-border digital crime.
