Gambling Commission Introduces New Deposit Limit Rules

Stronger safeguards for players from 2026

The UK Gambling Commission will enforce new deposit limit rules starting 30 June 2026, strengthening player protection measures. Under the new framework, gambling operators must offer clear deposit limits, allowing players to decide how much they can add to their accounts over a chosen period.

Importantly, only this feature can now be called a “deposit limit.” The Commission also plans to redefine the existing system as a “loss limit” to make spending controls easier to understand.

Tackling inequality and risky behaviour

Recent findings from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain show that gambling participation nearly doubles in deprived areas, underlining the need for stronger safeguards. Therefore, the Commission aims to create better tools that help vulnerable players stay aware of their financial limits.

Key changes coming soon

Before the full rollout in 2026, several updates will take effect on 31 October 2025, including:

  • Prompting customers to set financial limits during play.
  • Sending reminders every six months to review account activity.
  • Adding easy-access shortcuts to limit-setting tools on operator homepages.

Together, these measures will improve consistency, boost transparency, and promote responsible play across the industry.

A push for awareness and accountability

Helen Rhodes, the Commission’s Director of Major Policy Projects, emphasized the goal behind the initiative:

“Our work helps consumers gain greater awareness and control over their gambling.
These changes will also bring clarity for players choosing to set deposit limits, while allowing operators to maintain flexibility in offering different financial control options.”

Ultimately, the Commission wants to ensure that safer gambling becomes the standard, not just an option. By introducing clearer systems and regular reminders, it aims to build a fairer, more accountable gambling environment for everyone.
