GamCare Evaluation Shows Positive Impact of Money Guidance Service

GamCare has published the first full evaluation of its Money Guidance Service, revealing strong results in helping people affected by gambling-related financial harm.

Bridging the Gap Between Gambling Support and Debt Advice

The evaluation, titled “Bridging the Gap between Gambling Support and Debt Advice,” was independently carried out by Dr Xia Lin and Professor Alessio D’Angelo.

Findings show that the service is filling a crucial gap in the UK’s gambling harm and debt advice landscape. By offering gambling-specific financial support, the programme helps individuals facing money problems linked to gambling.

From Pilot to National Service

The Money Guidance Service was first launched in 2022 as a pilot in the East Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber. Following its success, it was rolled out nationwide in 2023.

Now, anyone contacting GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline can access the service alongside treatment and recovery support.

Key Benefits Reported in the Evaluation

The report highlights several positive outcomes for participants:

  • Improved financial stability and reduced debt levels
  • Greater confidence through budgeting tools and money management support
  • Enhanced long-term security for those recovering from gambling harms
  • Better internal training for helpline advisors, leading to stronger referrals and more effective guidance

According to GamCare, money problems are a common issue among those affected by gambling. Notably, 76% of helpline callers cite financial difficulties as a key impact.
