India’s sweeping ban on online gambling has disrupted the gaming, advertising, and sports sectors, while many users are already bypassing restrictions by shifting to offshore platforms.
The law, passed last month, prohibits fantasy sports and online card games, with violators facing up to five years in prison, according to Mathrubhumi. Authorities linked the ban to rising concerns over addiction, fraud, and alleged terrorism financing. Government data shows the industry generated US$2.3 billion annually from 450 million users.
Fantasy Giants Retreat from Cash Games
The ban forced Dream11, India’s largest fantasy sports operator with 260 million users, to suspend all cash-based contests. The company pivoted to offering non-cash prizes such as electronics and vehicles. It also pulled out of its US$43 million jersey sponsorship deal with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Fantasy platforms once fueled India’s sporting economy, contributing up to 40% of IPL advertising revenues. However, the restrictions now threaten that revenue stream.
Users Turn to Offshore Options
Despite tighter rules, Indian players are turning to unlicensed offshore sites, often using VPNs and foreign credit systems to continue gambling. “It’s a habit,” said Mumbai fantasy player Adarsh Sharma, adding that users will keep finding ways to play.
Impact on Cricket and Media Rights
Analysts warn the crackdown could reshape India’s sports economy. With fantasy operators cutting ad spend, the Indian Premier League (IPL) may face lower media rights valuations in 2027, when contracts come up for renewal.
