Nineteen licensed gambling operators in the Philippines have formed a new industry alliance to promote regulatory compliance and fight unauthorised gaming.
The PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines officially launched during a signing ceremony in Taguig City, marking a united front to tackle sector-wide challenges. Interim leadership includes major players such as DigiPlus Interactive Corp., World Platinum Technologies Inc., Trojans Well Entertainment Corp., and Gavin Ventures Inc. The move also comes as the government continues reviewing the country’s online gambling framework.
Targeting the Root of the Problem
Mike Defensor, spokesperson for the alliance and president of World Platinum Technologies Inc., emphasised the urgency of cracking down on illegal operators.
“The real enemy in the online gambling issue is the illegal market. No license, no control. Minors can play, no taxes are paid, and regulations are ignored. Instead of being protected, the public is put at risk,” Defensor said.
According to him, around 70% of the online gambling market operates illegally, while only 30% is legal, regulated, and paying taxes. He stressed that stronger regulation and a focus on licensed operators are essential to ensure safe, responsible, and fair gaming for all.
Strengthening Compliance and Consumer Protection
The alliance has outlined several key initiatives. First, it plans to cooperate closely with PAGCOR, particularly on marketing oversight and compliance. It will also enhance customer verification systems and introduce stricter age confirmation measures.
Additionally, the group aims to launch public awareness campaigns that highlight the benefits of regulated platforms and warn about the risks of illegal gambling sites. It also intends to fund research and prevention programs targeting gambling-related harm, including the launch of a national helpline service.
Recently, PAGCOR signed an agreement with the Ad Standards Council (ASC) to promote responsible advertising practices in the gaming industry — a move the alliance strongly supports.
Future Plans and Membership
Looking ahead, the coalition will elect officers and form specialized committees to focus on player protection, advertising standards, financial risk management, and illegal operator deterrence.
An independent advisory panel — comprising both local and international experts — will guide policies on responsible gaming, public health, and consumer advocacy.
The PlaySafe Alliance remains open to other licensed operators that want to join. Interested parties can contact the interim council for membership details.
