South Korea has recorded a sharp increase in reports of youth online gambling. Voluntary submissions rose 74% during the second month of a nationwide reporting program.
According to data from the Korean National Police Agency cited by Yonhap News Agency, authorities received 512 reports during the program’s second month. This compares with 294 in the first month.
Reports Continue to Increase
Between May 18 and mid-July, authorities recorded a total of 806 reports involving underage online gambling.
Among the cases, 629 reports were submitted by young gamblers, while 177 came from parents or guardians. The reporting initiative targets individuals under the age of 19 and aims to encourage early intervention and support.
Cases Reveal Financial Harm
Police said several reports highlighted the financial risks associated with youth gambling.
One case involved an 18-year-old who allegedly borrowed KRW5 million (US$3,500) from more than 10 illegal lenders to fund gambling activities. The loans reportedly carried annual interest rates of 200%. Furthermore, the teenager later reported receiving threats and unlawful debt collection demands.
Authorities also reported a case involving a 14-year-old who allegedly deposited KRW26 million (US$18,100) into online gambling sites after borrowing KRW2 million (US$1,400) from 41 classmates. In another incident, a 14-year-old was accused of withdrawing KRW30 million (US$20,900) from his father’s bank account to gamble online.
Support Program Continues
The Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting Program offers support services for young people affected by online gambling. These include referrals to addiction treatment, psychiatric care, and debt adjustment programs.
Authorities said the initiative will continue until August 31, with reports accepted through South Korea’s 117 school violence reporting and counseling service. The program forms part of broader efforts to address the growing impact of underage online gambling and related financial crimes.
