Thailand Explores Disneyland-Style Mega Resort in EEC

Deputy PM Confirms Feasibility Study

Thailand is exploring a large-scale “Disneyland-style” tourism and entertainment project in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), according to Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Speaking to The Nation, Phiphat—also Transport Minister and overseer of the EEC—confirmed that preliminary assessments suggest the project is feasible. Specifically, feasibility is under a public–private partnership (PPP) model.

The development aims to boost Thailand’s post-COVID tourism recovery and attract international visitors. It will combine state oversight with private-sector investment, technology, and expertise. Notably, officials emphasized that the project does not include a casino. This differentiates it from other large-scale entertainment proposals in the region.

Beyond a Theme Park: Multi-Venue Ambitions

Plans for the project go well beyond a conventional amusement park. Proposed features include:

  • A concert hall capable of hosting world-class performances.
  • A stadium with at least 80,000 seats, designed for international sports competitions, concerts, and large-scale events.

The vision is to create a comprehensive entertainment hub that draws both domestic tourists and international travelers. This will position Thailand as a regional leisure and events destination.

EEC Chosen for Infrastructure and Connectivity

The EEC’s existing infrastructure makes it an ideal location, Phiphat said. The corridor benefits from:

  • International airports and rail networks, including planned high-speed rail links.
  • Deep-sea ports facilitating tourism and logistics.
  • Proximity to major destinations such as Bangkok, Pattaya, and Rayong.

These factors support large-scale developments that combine entertainment, hospitality, and sports facilities in a single integrated project.

Past Discussions on Casino Resorts

The EEC has previously been mentioned as a potential site for casino resorts. Under the former administration led by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, five locations nationwide—including two in Bangkok, one in the EEC, Chiang Mai, and Phuket—were considered for entertainment complexes featuring casinos. However, legislative efforts to legalize gambling at that time ultimately failed, leaving current proposals casino-free.

With feasibility studies underway, Thailand’s Disneyland-style concept could become a flagship tourism project. It would combine entertainment, sports, and large-scale events to strengthen the country’s position as a top Southeast Asian travel destination.
