Western Cape Gambling Tax Tops R1.19bn

South Africa’s Western Cape collected R1.192 billion in gambling tax between January and July 2026, with sports betting generating the largest share of provincial revenue.

Sports betting contributed R692.44 million in tax during the period, supported by turnover of R224.35 billion and gross gaming revenue (GGR) of R10.66 billion. Casinos, horse racing and limited payout machines (LPMs) generated the remaining R499.41 million.

Sports Betting Leads Tax Revenue

Sports betting accounted for more than half of the Western Cape’s gambling tax during the first seven months of 2026.

Horse racing generated R217.68 million in tax from R5.57 billion in turnover, while casinos contributed R211.89 million. LPMs generated a further R69.84 million in tax.

The figures show the different scales of the province’s regulated gambling segments, with sports betting generating substantially higher turnover and tax revenue than the other categories.

July Revenue Reaches R174.1 Million

The Western Cape collected R174.1 million in gambling tax in July alone, with sports betting again providing the largest contribution at R93.56 million.

Horse-racing tax increased 27% from June to R38.67 million, while its GGR reached R644.50 million.

Casinos recorded R1.47 billion in GGR and R211.89 million in tax across the January-to-July period. LPMs generated R506.65 million in revenue and contributed almost R70 million in tax.

Western Cape Maintains Strong Gambling Market

The latest figures highlight the significant contribution of regulated gambling to the Western Cape’s provincial revenue.

Sports betting remains the dominant segment by turnover and tax contribution, while casinos, horse racing and LPMs continue to provide additional revenue across the province’s gambling market.

The performance also reflects the growing scale of sports betting within South Africa’s regulated gambling sector during 2026.
